20261101 NAS Statement Situation in Kapoeta South

In a statement dated 1 November 2026, the National Salvation Front (NAS) said security in Kapoeta South, particularly the gold-rich Nakeke area, is worsening. It said about 600 SSPDF soldiers were sent from Juba on 31 October to carry out a reprisal attack on Toposa youth defending their community’s gold resources. NAS said the clashes reportedly left dozens of soldiers killed, wounded or unaccounted for, and several civilians killed, some allegedly targeted deliberately. It condemned Governor Lobong and the Caretaker Government of Eastern Equatoria, held them and those directing operations from Juba responsible, and commended the Toposa youth. NAS urged civil society and faith leaders to speak out, appealed to UNMISS to protect civilians, and called on UN human rights mechanisms to open an independent investigation. It closed with condolences and a call for restraint and transparent management of natural resources.
