Angry mob chant ‘Kiir Must Go’ after a Mayardit murders five in Juba

A mob of angry civilians have gathered and are chanting ‘Kiir Must Go’ after a son of the Mayardit family shot and killed 5 civilians (four men and a woman) and injured seven others in what appears to be a land-related dispute.

The incident took place Wednesday morning in Juba around the Sherikat area (Gumba) in the eastern bank of the Nile.

The perpetrator, Lual Akok Wol Kiir, has been apprehended but is said to be in ‘critical condition’. Reports suggest he was injured in the process of trying to subdue him.

In an attempt to distance itself from the perpetrator Lual Akok Wol Kiir, the presidency issued a statement saying “Lual Akok Wol Kiir is a [distance] cousin to the President” and not his son. However, another official statement issued at their wedding in September 2019 introduced the new-weds as “..the groom Lual Marine Akook Wol is a nephew of President Salva Kiir and the bride is Mia Ayen Gregory is a niece to the First Lady Mary Ayen Mayardit.”
